PM Gati Shakti: ₹11.17 Lakh Crore Mega Push to Transform India's Logistics Infrastructure

In a significant move to overhaul India's logistics sector, the Ministry of Finance has announced the identification of 434 projects under the ambitious PM Gati Shakti initiative, with an impressive budget allocation of ₹11.17 lakh crore.

The initiative, aimed at achieving multi-modal connectivity and enhancing logistics efficiency, encompasses three critical economic corridors:

  1. Energy, Mineral, and Cement Corridors
  2. Port Connectivity Corridors
  3. High Traffic Density Corridors

Together, these corridors are designed to streamline India's transportation networks, reducing logistics costs and supporting vital industries such as energy, cement, and port operations.

Progress Under PM Gati Shakti

The Ministry of Finance highlighted the programme's advancements in a post on X: "With 434 projects identified under the three major economic corridor programmes, PM Gati Shakti for Multi-Modal Connectivity will ensure both logistic efficiency and logistic cost. #BudgetForViksitBharat"

Key achievements under the Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal (GCT) programme include:

  • 91 terminals commissioned as of October 31, 2024.
  • 339 applications received for developing new terminals.
  • 234 projects granted in-principle approvals, reflecting rapid implementation.

Focus Areas and Investment Highlights

  • Energy, Mineral, and Cement Corridors: 192 projects identified to support India's energy demands and resource transportation.
  • High Traffic Density Corridors: 200 projects aim to alleviate congestion and enhance high-traffic routes.
  • Port Connectivity Corridors: 42 projects to bolster the efficiency of maritime transport, enabling seamless connectivity.

Out of the total projects, 156 Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have been prepared. Significant milestones include:

  • 68 projects sanctioned: Covering 6,290 km of track with a cost of ₹1.11 lakh crore.
  • 88 projects under appraisal: Spanning 10,603 km, valued at ₹2.25 lakh crore, currently undergoing inter-ministerial consultations.

A Revolution in Logistics

The corridor-based approach under PM Gati Shakti is set to revolutionize India's logistics landscape by:

  • Reducing logistics costs: Enhancing competitiveness for critical industries.
  • Increasing efficiency: Enabling seamless multi-modal connectivity.
