Mr. Vivek Kumar Gupta is a highly respected civil engineer and public sector leader, currently serving as the Managing Director of the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the executing agency for India’s first high-speed rail project between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. An officer of the Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE) from the 1988 batch, Mr. Gupta took charge as MD on February 5, 2024.
He brings more than three decades of diverse experience in railway planning, construction, operations, and strategic project execution. Prior to his current role, he served as Principal Executive Director (Gati Shakti) at the Railway Board, where he led multi-disciplinary coordination across seven departments including Civil, Electrical, Signal & Telecom, Traffic, Finance, and Planning.
Mr. Gupta has held several leadership positions in Central and Western Railways, such as Chief Administrative Officer (Construction), Chief Track Engineer, Chief Bridge Engineer, and Divisional Railway Manager (Bhusaval). He played a pivotal role in implementing major infrastructure projects including new lines, gauge conversion, doubling works, and modernization of bridges.
At Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), he was instrumental in delivering the Mumbai Urban Transport Projects (MUTP) Phases I, II, and III, with combined investments exceeding ₹20,000 crore, and was involved in preparing MUTP 3A valued at ₹34,000 crore. His collaborative approach with the World Bank, AIIB, MMRDA, CIDCO, and state agencies ensured smooth execution and funding of critical urban transport initiatives.
As Divisional Railway Manager, he demonstrated excellence in safety, cost-efficiency, infrastructure growth, and welfare measures. Since joining NHSRCL, Mr. Gupta has been closely supervising major construction milestones, including station works, tunnels, bridges, and track systems across Gujarat and Maharashtra, reflecting his hands-on and results-driven leadership.
Under his direction, NHSRCL is moving steadily towards making India’s bullet train dream a reality, combining engineering precision, international best practices, and speed of execution.
